Zdravím Nightingale vespolek. Co jste mi to provedli? Stal jsem na „Retribution“ totálně závislý!

Sorry :) Já jsem na tom albu rovněž závislý a poslouchám ho stále dokola! Dnes jsem ho opětovně poslouchal dost pečlivě při cestě do studia ... většinou se nahrávkou přesytím někdy v době, kdy vychází, ale tentokrát jsem stále spokojený na 101 %. Skvělý pocit!

Jste s konečnou podobou novinky s menším odstupem plně spokojeni? Jaké jste zaznamenali první dojmy od fans?

Jo, jsme naprosto spokojení. Více než kdy před tím. Věnovat se každému drobnému detailu samozřejmě vezme hodně času, ale nakonec, když všechno dosedne na své místo, můžu pak sám poslouchat, jak to zní jako celek. Což je lepší, než se zaměřovat na všechny maličkosti, které mě otravují. Zpětná vazba je zatím skvělá. V důležitých časopisech se objevily nějaké skutečně pozitivní recenze a stejně tak se těším na naši premiéru v časopisech jako Classic Rock, A.O.R., Classic Rock Germany, Fireworks atd. V některých internetových recenzích jsme dostali plný počet, a to je úžasné samo o sobě!

Desku zdobí nádherně organický zvuk jako za starých časů. Použili jste i nějaké vintage nástroje, efekty atd., nebo je vše výsledek moderních mašinek?

Asi bys byl hodně překvapený, kdybys věděl, jaké „ne-vintage“ zařízení používáme :) Největší vintage záležitost (z pohledu stáří), kterou jsme použili pro tuhle desku, byla pravděpodobně kytara Ibanez Blazer z 80. let, kterou použil můj brácha ve skladbě „Chasing the Storm Away“. Jinak pro nahrávání používáme docela normální studiové vybavení a samozřejmě profesionální SW pro mix a mastering. Osobně jsem ale rád, že vintage zvuk je dnes oživen právě díky SW aplikacím. Používám téměř výhradně UAD-2 plug-iny pro EQ, reverb a kompresi (jde o dvoujádrovou záležitost, takže můžu jít klidně pro banány bez vyčerpání DSP). Díky těmhle nástrojům je ta práce skvělá a výsledek zní velice blízce skutečnému sejmutí (v orig. the real deal – pozn. red.).

Docela mě překvapil optimistický nádech alba. Můžeš rozvést, o čem pojednávají texty „Retribution“?

„27 (Curse or Coinfidence?)“ vypráví příběh o „Klubu dvaceti sedmi“. Ti všichni mají svou vlastní část textů. Studoval jsem jejich životy hodně pečlivě a jejich příběhy byly natolik smutné, že zkoumat jejich pád byl vlastně velmi emočně silný zážitek. První část je o Robertu Johnsonovi a o tom, jak se rozhodl upsat duši ďáblu, aby byl králem blues. Druhý je o Jimi Hendrixovi. Pro texty, které byly psány o něm, jsem se snažil použít co nejvíc názvů jeho skladeb, které jsem uspořádal do vět tak, aby to dávalo smysl. Bylo to hodně časově náročné, ale ten výsledek stojí za to! Závěrečná část je o Kurtu Cobainovi.

„Divided I Fall“ je napsaná o jednom páru siamských dvojčat, o nichž jsem kdysi někde něco četl. Jedno z nich bylo silné a to druhé slabé, vzájemně si brali životní síly a rodiče se měli rozhodnout mezi tím, jestli se budou dívat, jak obě zemřou, nebo mezi jejich oddělením a usmrcením toho slabého. Ten text jsem napsal z pohledu toho slabého. Vlastně jsem se během natáčení závěrečné části skladby neubránil dojetí, což se mi stalo vůbec poprvé.

Text „The Voyage of Endurance“ je skutečný příběh objevitele Ernesta Shackletona a jeho týmu, kteří dlouhé roky poznávali ledové pláně Antarktidy. „Maze“ je směs faktů a fikce. Je o geniálním matematikovi, který se nakonec ztratil ve své vlastní mysli. Všechno kolem něj bylo tak oslnivé, že raději utekl do vlastního světa, celého v jeho hlavě. Bubeník Tom napsal vynikající text o depresi „Echoes of a Dream“ a také text k „Warriors of Dawn“, inspirovaný prvními Vikingy, kteří dosáhli břehů Anglie.

Zejména mě nadchl název druhé skladby „Lucifer’s Lament“. Co rozesmutnilo Lucifera?

Zmeškal autobus! Všechno si můžeš přečíst v odpovědi výše :)

Nightingale začal jako one man projekt, pak jste fungovali coby duo a už 14 let jste regulérní kapela s neměnnou sestavou. Můžeš srovnat všechny etapy? Je aktuální stav – tedy kompletní kapela – zatím to nejlepší?

Tahle otázka se táhne přes celou historii jak červená nit. Teď už jsem ale přesvědčen, že Tomovo bubnování a baskytara a doprovodné vokály Erika přináší celkovému zvuku kapely opravdu hodně, takže spolupráce ve čtyřech je pro Nightingale definitivně to nejlepší řešení.

Podílíte se všichni na skládání, nebo je vše práce pouze jednoho a ostatní pak jen přispějí svým nástrojem?

Pro tohle album jsem napsal devět z deseti skladeb, tu desátou napsal brácha. Pro desku „White Darkness“ napsal všechny skladby brácha až na jednu, kterou napsal náš bubeník Tom. Dá se proto říct, že je tu hodně možností, kdo a kdy píše novou muziku. Udržuje nás to svěží :)

Album vychází po sedmi letech. Proč taková prodleva?

Z mnoha důvodů. Nejdůležitější z nich byl asi ten, že jsem měl pocit, že napsaný materiál není dostatečně silný pro slušné album. A protože my nemusíme vydávat desky proto, že by nás něco nutilo, museli tím živit rodinu nebo že bychom museli jet na turné, tak jsme prostě čekali, až bude k dispozici dostatek kvalitních skladeb pro silné album, které posluchačům nakope zadek. A to celé trvalo sedm let. Může to trvat dalších sedm let, než vydáme další desku ... ale třeba jen tři, nebo taky deset, kdo ví. Pro nás je v životě mnoho důležitějších věcí než Nightingale, takže uvidíme, co budoucnost přinese. Příští roky si budu užívat „Retribution“ :)

Novinku vydává velký koncern InsideOut Music. Oproti více metalově zaměřenému labelu Black Mark Production je to velký pokrok. Je možné srovnat rozdíly v přístupu ke kapele a k propagaci jako takové?

Kdybychom byli pod labelem typu InsideOut už někdy v době „Alive Again“, případně ještě dříve, věci kolem Nightingale by byly hodně jiné. To jsem si jistý. S aktuální nahrávkou jsem měl pár malých cílů a InsideOut je splnili všechny a ještě nějaké navíc. Takže ano. Nightingale je určitě lépe pod vydavatelem, jakého mají i jiné kapely v tomto žánru, než pod vydavatelem death / blackové muziky, ke kterému jsme se moc nehodili. Na druhou stranu bez umělecké svobody a finanční pomoci u Black Mark bychom s Nightingale začínali jen hodně těžko!

Rovněž mě zajímá, zda v době neustálého poklesu prodeje nosičů investuje firma do skupiny - peníze na studio, obaly atd. Nebo si vše platíte sami a label vás „jen“ distribuuje po světě?

Měli jsme velice podobný rozpočet jako na albech, která jsme dělali dříve. Určitě bychom se ale nedostali tak daleko, kdybychom museli nahrávat a míchat ve studiu někoho, kdo by nebyl z kapely. Naštěstí ale máme k dispozici spoustu míst, kde můžeme nahrávat a míchat, aniž bychom za to museli platit ... a navíc bez jakéhokoliv zhoršení výsledné kvality. Takže rozpočet byl naprosto postačující a jeho část tak mohla jít do naprosto skvělého obalu od Travise Smithe a do layoutu od Thomase Ewerharda!

Můžeme se těšit i na nějaký koncert na podporu „Retribution“?

Doufáme v to. V této chvíli není nic jisté, ale v minulosti nám spadly do klína naprosto skvělé akce ... takže počkáme a uvidíme :)

Dane, jsou tvoje muzikantské aktivity směřované nyní pouze k Nightingale a Witherscape, nebo se můžeme těšit ještě na něco jiného?

Zatím plánuju dokončení alba Second Sky, na kterém pracuju už deset let a možná tak ještě tři nebo čtyři roky na něm budu dělat, než bude hotové. Stejně tak doufám ve vydání nějakého deathmetalového sólového alba na konci roku 2016. A samozřejmě druhé album Witherscape na konci roku 2015. Hned po ukončení tohoto rozhovoru se vracím zpátky k práci na demosnímcích pro tuhle desku!

Jsi v hudbě doslova ponořený. Máš ve volném čase ještě chuť poslouchat nějakou muziku? Nebo raději čteš, sportuješ?

Velmi rád čtu biografie umělců, naposledy jsem naprosto hltal knížku od Scotta Iana. Nádherné čtení! Fanda do sportu jsem nikdy moc nebyl. Jako malý jsem byl docela slibný fotbalový brankář, ale nakonec se pro mě stalo mnohem důležitější bubnování. Takže jsem opustil to „obětování se“, abych chytal míč nebo byl třeba zraněn a nemohl pak odehrát koncert se svou kapelou ... haha ... no a tak jsem byl degradován na obránce, ale sral jsem na to a nakonec jsem přestal hrát fotbal úplně. Když jsem se naposledy snažil o sportovní výkon, zlomil jsem si nohu, pro nic za nic jsem musel na operaci, protože mi nic jiného nezbývalo. Takže ne, sport není pro mě!

Muziku poslouchám, jinou než tu, na které právě dělám, asi půl hodiny denně při jízdě autem ze studia. Obvykle skrze iPod. Většinou jednotlivé skladby, ale teď mě chytla úžasná věc, což je nové album „Framework“ od Work of Art. To je jednoduše skvělé!

V poslední době se dost mluví o vzestupu digitálního prodeje hudby. Co si myslíš o této podobě prodeje?

Pro mě je to cesta, jak se dostat k poslechu té které skladby. Navíc od doby, kdy jsem si rippnul všechna svá CDčka a vyhodil jsem je z regálu, poslouchám muziku pouze z mp3-playeru. Nakupování on-line muziky je rychlé, ale na druhou stranu je člověk ošizen o hodně skvělých detailů z bookletu a z vydání jako takového, což je docela škoda. Pravda je ale taková, že novou hudbu téměř vůbec nekupuju a na místo toho ji poslouchám na Spotify.

Děkuju ti mnohokrát za tvůj čas, a Nightingale přeju ještě hodně inspirací a chutí hrát.

Hi Nightingale. What did you do to me? I became totally addicted on “Retribution”!

Sorry :) I am totally addicted too! Can't stop listening to it myself! Heard it again in the care on the way to the studio...usually I am fed up with the albums I have done by the time the album comes out. I am still 101% happy with everything! Awesome feeling!

With a short time interval - are you satisfied with a final form of your new album? What was the first fans’ feedback you’ve noticed?

Yup. Super satisfied. More than ever before. It takes a lot of time to pay attention to every tiny little detail, but in the end, when all pieces have fallen into place, I can listen to it for what it truly is..rather than focusing on all the little things that annoy me! The feedback is beyond amazing. Some really good reviews from really important magazines, and we're looking forward to first time features in magz like Classic Rock A.O.R. Classic Rock Germany, Fireworks etc. Some on line reviews have already been full score..which is amazing in itself!!

Your new album sounds very organically like in the old days. Did you use any vintage instruments, effects etc., or is this sound just a result of modern equipment?

You'd be surprised to know exactly how "un-vintage" the stuff is that we use :) The most vintage thing (from age) that was used on this album is probably the Ibanez Blazer guitar from the 80's that my brother used for the cleans on “Chasing the Storm Away” other than that, it's pretty normal project studio equipment used for the recordings, and professional software tools that was used for the mix and mastering. But I love the way the vintage stuff is replicated in the software domain. I use almost exclusively the UAD-2 plug ins for EQ, Reverbs and Compression (Have 2 Quad cards ... so I can go bananas without running out of DSP!!) and since the modelling is so damn amazing, it sounds really close to using “the real deal”

I was quite surprised of an optimistic tone of album. Can you approach what are lyrics about?

27 (Curse or Coincidence?) is telling the story of the Club of 27. They all have their own section of the lyrics, and I studied their lives really carefully on line and their life stories are all so sad, that it was actually pretty emotional to investigate their downfall. First part is about Robert Johnson and how he's supposed to have sold his soul for the devil to master the Blues. Second one is about Jimi Hendrix. For the lines written about him, I tried to use as much of his song titles as possible, but put into sentenced that made sense with the over all concept. Very time consuming, but worth the work once it worked out!! The final chapter is about Kurt Cobain.

“Divided I Fall” is written about a pair of conjoint twins that I read about somewhere on line. One of them was strong and the other one weak, with the weak one “feeding” off the life-force from the strong one, and the parents had to choose between seeing them both die or separate them and let the weak one die. I wrote the lyrics from the view of the soul of the weak part. I actually shed a tear during the recording of the final part of the song, and it's the first time I ever did that.

The lyrics for “The Voyage of Endurance” is about the true story about the explorer Ernest Shackleton and his crew that survived years stranded on the ice of Antarctica. “The Maze” is a blend of fact and fiction. It's about a super brilliant mathematician that finally get lost in his own mind. There's just too much brilliance there and he just escape into his own world, all in his mind. Drummer Tom have written an excellent lyric about depression “Echoes of a Dream” and also a lyrics to “Warriors of the Dawn” inspired by the first Vikings to reach the shores of England

Here's what bass player Erik have to say about his lyrical contributions to the album:

ON STOLEN WINGS

For quite some time now, movies, TV-series and books have been overcrowded with vampires, werewolves, demons and whatnot, so I thought :”why not join the trend and write something about that”. But I didn’t want to write about something fictional. The ”modern vampire” character in the lyrics is loosely based on different people I’ve meet or heard about over the years, people who actually live on the work and efforts from others and by doing that they suck the life-lust  and energy from their victims.

These people relay exist  and they are, in my opinion, a hell of a lot scarier than the ones you meet in the fictional world.

LUCIFER'S LAMENT

For some unknown reason I had an urge to get the phrase ”fallen from grace” in to one of the lyrics and it worked it’s way in to this song. Dan and I had a little viral brainstorming about perhaps having a religious or mythological theme in one of the songs. On the demo version of the song, in the soft part, Dan sings ”I’ve been dreaming in a fire place…” which I thought was hilarious. But then I started to think about it and I realised that there is a mythological figure that sits in hot place and has fallen from grace: the lyric more or less wrote itself from that point.There is also a broader perspective: is it possible for ”good” to exist if there is no obvious ”evil”? And who decides what is good or evil and on what premises? (The title is my homage to CCR: they have a song called Sailors Lament on their album Pendulum…)

CHASING THE STORM AWAY

I first heard the demo version of the song a couple of years ago and immediately fell in love with it. It has a kind of underlying despair and frustration which i find most intriguing! The first idea for this song was about a young person living his life through computer games: a ruler of empires in the night and an absolute nobody at day. The working title was ”Silent King”. The second version was called ”Inner storms” and had a more introvert approach: trying to avoid the ”inner storms” you might build up if you don’t deal with problem that you meet along the way.

When it was decided that the lyrical themes of the album were to be of a more general kind I thought ”crap…”. But it only took some minor changes and to be honest it was for the better: I think the lyric now works both ways. (And i really struggled to get the word ”aftermath” in the final version: anything for Dag! ;)) It is a dark and not very hopeful picture but that's the way I feel sometimes when I think about the state of our planet. A lot of talking going on but nothing is done…

FOREVERMORE

On November 18, 1978, over 900 people committed suicide in the jungles of Guyana. The place was called Jonestown and was founded by Jim Jones, the leader of PeoplesTemple. I was 11 years old when that happened and I still remember how I felt when i saw the pictures from that tragic incident. The lyrics are based upon that story. History is full of examples of  extreme cults, religious or political fanatics whose followers are willing to sacrifice everything , even their own lives and the lives of others, for ”the cause”.  And it always seems to follow the same pattern: a promise of total happiness, the truth revealed to all who believe, an absolute loyalty to the leader…and it all ends up in chaos, death and despair…

Particularly I’m excited about a name of second track “ Lucifer’s Lament ”. What saddened Lucifer?

Nightingale began as a one man project, then you became a duo and now you are a regular band with an invariant line-up for 14 years. Can you compare all these eras? Is the current state – the full band – still the best?

Well, musically there's always been a “red thread” through all the stuff. But I definitely believe that the drumming of Tom and the bass playing and backing vocals of Erik brought a lot to the over all sound of the band. So the 4 of use is definitely the best solution for Nightingale.

Are all of you involved by composing new music, or it is mostly a work of one member and the others just contribute with their instrument?

For this album I have written 9 out of 10 songs, my brother wrote the 10 th. For White Darkness my brother wrote all songs but one, that was written by our drummer Tom. So there's a lot of variety in the way we write material!! Keeps it fresh :)

Your new album was released after seven years from the previous one. Why this delay?

Many reasons. But most importantly, I didn't feel that the material available was strong enough to make a decent album. And since we don't have to put stuff out because of a label “forcing” us to...or to go touring and support our families...I just waiting until there was enough strong tracks to build an album that kicked ass. And it took 7 years. Could take 7 years for the next one too...or 3 or 10..who knows. There's more things to life than Nightingale for all of us, so we'll see what happens. I will enjoy the awesomeness of “Retribution” for years to come :)

Album was released by famous label InsideOut Music. I think it’s a big step forward compared to more or less metal label Black Mark Production. Is it possible to compare differences in promotion and in “taking care” of a band?

If we'd been on a label like InsideOut since “Alive Again” or ever before that, things would have been a lot different in the world of Nightingale, that is for sure. I had a few tiny goals with this release, and InsideOut have fulfilled them all and then some. So yes. Nightingale is better off on a label that have other bands in this genre than on a Death/Black label where we we're the odd one out! But without Black Mark's artistic freedom and help to pay for recordings, there would never have been a Nightingale to begin with!

I’m also wondering, whether at this time of sales decline is label investing in bands – for music studio, packaging etc. Or do you have to pay everything themselves and label “only” distributes you through the world?

We had a similar budget to the other albums we've done. It wouldn't have reached very far if we have had to recorded and mixed in a studio owner by someone outside the band..but luckily, there's a whole bunch of places where we can record and mix without to pay..without sacrificing any quality..so the budget was just fine and parts of it also went to the awesome cover from Travis Smith and the layout for Thomas Ewerhard!

Can we look forward to a concert, supporting “Retribution”?

We hope so. Nothing solid at the moment, but we've had a history with awesome gigs falling into our laps..so we'll wait and see :)

Dan, are your musical activities now absorbed only in Nightingale and Witherscape, or we can look forward to anything else?

I still plan to finished the Second Sky album. It's been 10 year in the making, and might be 3-4 more before it's done. And I also hope to release a solo album with Death Metal stuff at the end of 2016. And of course a 2 nd Witherscape album at the end of 2015. Will go back to work on the demos for that one right after finishing this interview!

You are literally immersed in music. Do you have an energy to listen any music in your leisure time? Or rather read, make sport?

I love to read artist biographies. The latest one I devoured was the book from Scott Ian. Awesome reading. Never was much of a sports fan. When I was a kid I was quite a promising football goalkeeper until drumming became more important. Then I quit “sacrificing” myself to catch the ball, just in case I would hurt myself and not being able to play the next gig with my band...ha, ha...so I was degraded to the defended, and I sucked at that, and eventually stopped playing football all together. Last time I tried to by “sporty” I broke my knee completely and had surgery for nothing, since it is the kind of damaged you cannot repair...so...no sports for me!!

I listen to music, other than the stuff I mix for about 30 min a day, driving to and from the studio. Usually the iPod shuffle of my 1200 fav. Songs, but recently I have been caught by the wonderful thing that is the new “Work of Art” album “Framework” Simply. Fuckin. Awesome!

Recently, it talks a lot about rise of digital music sales. What do you think about this way of selling music?

For me, it is about getting that track to listen to. And since I have ripped all my CD's and put them away in storage...I listen to music in an MP3 player any way. So buying music on line is quick, but you are missing out a lot of cool details from the booklet and stuff, which can be a bit annoying. But I am not buying that much new music any more. I listen to stuff on Spotify instead.
